PCRules.com - Cooler Master Jet 4 Review by Timothy Crittenden

Developer: Cooler Master

Release Date: Out Now

Cooler Master, one of the world’s leaders in PC cooling technology, have cooked up something completely different with the new Jet4. The radical new “Jet” fan looks very impressive and stylish, whether it cools as well as it looks is yet to be revealed.

Cooler Master produce a huge selection of cooling orientated equipment. Whether it’s a computer case, thermal probe, or just a fan for your CPU, Cooler Master has products to suit the hardcore user, or the skint student. They originally produced the jet fan for Intel’s rival AMD, and it was a little while until the Jet 4 P4 cooler came along and frankly the thing is a beast. The Jet 4 is huge, much bigger than I originally expected at 130mm tall and weighing 700g!

The manufacturer’s specifications are as follows:

Socket Type Intel P4/478
Heat Sink Dimension 83 x 68 x 50 mm
Heat Sink Material Copper Stacked Fin
Fan Dimension Blower 80x80x80 mm
Fan Speed 1900~3500 rpm
Fan Airflow 12.0~22.1 CFM
Fan Air Pressure 3.15 ~ 10.70 mm H2O
Fan Life Expectance 50000 hrs
Bearing Type Dual ball bearing
Voltage Rating 5.0~13.8V
Noise Level 21~41dBA
Connector 4 Pin (Power Input), 3 Pin (Speed Detection)
Weight 700g
Thermal Resistance Rca 0.41~0.35 ℃/W
Application All Intel P4 Socket 478 CPU

The fan comes well packaged showing off the stylish Jet engine, and for once I did not have to battle to get the box open with industrial size shears. The fan comes packaged with a choice of to speed control fittings, one for your 3.5” FDD bay, or a bracket that goes in the back of your computer next to your PCI and AGP slots. I personally went for the front option for easy of use, and extra style. Also packaged with the cooler you got some silicon thermal compound and clear installation instructions.

Installation was easy to understand, yet a little tricky to do. The computer needed to be on its side because the attachment brackets aren’t attached to the cooler which make the job of mounting the cooler a little fiddly. This is partly due to the shear size of the jet.

The weight of the cooler was obviously due to the new design copper heatsink. It is split up into lots of thin copper plates with a large copper slab on the underneath where it has contact with the CPU. The large number of copper strips increases surface area and therefore there is an increased airflow over the heatsink which vastly improves cooling.

The whole idea behind the Jet engine itself is that it is meant to give much better cooling at lower speeds. This is because with conventional fans, you get a blind spot in the middle where there are no spinning blades. On a CPU fan/heatsink this centre blind spot is directly over the CPU itself. However the new jet fan doesn’t have a blind spot giving equal airflow over the entirety of the heatsink.

Well that’s the theory! The question is now, does it perform as well as it is meant to? I can happily say yes to that question, there is a substantial drop in CPU temperature with the Jet 4. My system temperature is never particularly cool due to the amount of hardware in there, so test conditions for my results will not have brought the best out of this cooler. However it’s the comparison between the factory cooler and the Jet 4 which matters. And in the graph it can be seen that under load with the factory cooler the temperature gets as high as 55, whereas with the Jet 4 it sits at about 46 (47 at min RPM). Combined with the idle temperatures of 50 and 42 (43 at min RPM) it’s obvious that Cooler Master have hit the nail on the head and created a superior cooling machine.

Note:

  • Some of the pictures used have been taken from the Cooler Master Product Website

  • For load temperatures I used virtual dub to compress video files.

Quality: 10/10
Excellent quality as would be expected from a world renowned company such as Cooler Master.

Price: 9/10
Not the cheapest cooler around, but not the most expensive, and for the cooling power, £35 is worth it.

Installation: 8/10
A little bit fiddly, and maybe a little tricky for less competent users but its not rocket science. It fits and installs fairly easily.

Compatibility: 9/10
Will cooler any P4 that is out today, but you do need a little room in you tower, but it just sticks out in front of your CPU, so unless you have a very short motherboard power cable you shouldn’t have any problems here

Performance : 9/10
It isn’t a water cooler, but it performs well, and substantially better than the stock fan!

Overall : 45/50

Great cooling, with unique style Cooler Master have created a top notch fan. And how cool is a Jet in your computer!
