The Delta Force series has had its ups and its downs. I have
played every one of the four in the series, the first;
“Delta Force” was really good (in my opinion). It wasn’t a
very tactical, tactical shooter, but was a tactical none
tactical shooter. This with my level of gaming expertise at
the time of release really suited me, and did many people
I’m sure.

Delta
Force 2 when it came out was a real disappointment, there
were no real improvements, and the graphics looked the same
but needed a more powerful machine, and most importantly
just wasn’t as enjoyable as the first was. Land Warrior was
shocking, with poor outdated graphics and poor AI, the
announcement of a fourth Delta Force wasn’t met with a lot
of enthusiasm. However they seem to have done a better job
this time. |

In Delta
Force: Black Hawk Down, it has improved its playability to
match the original Delta Force. First plays show a good fun
tactical shooter, capable of giving many hours of fun.
Granted the graphics are a little outdated, but they don’t
look bad, but the Delta Force series haven’t been renowned
for cutting edge graphics, but graphics aren’t everything.
The gameplay is always the deciding factor with these games,
and it does mean that you don’t need such a high spec
machine as such games like Unreal 2. |

Again
this game is about the best of the beast tactical hit
squads, “The Delta Force”, the US equivalent of our
(British) SAS. These are teams of highly trained
professionals, who are given the task of going into highly
hostiles situations to rescue hostages, take out a group of
terrorist, destroy a radio station or stop and arms deal.
You as part of the elite force of men are dropped in the
middle of it and are told to do your job.
Before you start, you select your mission, at first there is
a choice of three, every time you complete a mission another
one appears to replace it. You can always repeat missions
when ever you wish. Once you have selected your mission, you
then select your equipment; there is a nice selection of
authentic weaponry to choose from. Depending on you mission
there are heavy machine guns, semi automatics and sniper
rifles. You also get a choice of side arm; this is down to
preference depending on what type of pistol u prefer. The
last of your choices is what sort of explosive/tool you are
going to need, whether it be a satchel charge or and RPG.
Another nice little touch they’ve added to this latest
instalment of Delta Force are vehicle trips. On your
insertion you don’t just appear out of the blue you get to
ride the chopper, or truck to your destination and get out
yourself. There are also missions in which you ride the
chopper, or armoured car and you have control of the mini
gun, or turret gun. This adds a little variation into the
gameplay.

Sadly
there are again downers to the game, the AI isn’t brilliant,
enemies just run out in front of you and shoot, the don’t
hide or run for cover, no medal of honour tactics in this
one. Consequently this game is far too easy, I personally
like games that are a challenge at first on medium, but this
one is very easy even on a medium setting. Games set to hard
should be hard, not just a little challenging, its just
silly, for better players than me they would just get board
of it. Also there isn’t really anything to each of the
missions, because of the lack of decent AI all the missions
are, are run in, kill a few drones, blow up a few vehicles
destroy a tower and your done. It doesn’t really portray
what it would be like to be a member of Delta Force.
This game is far too gun-ho for a tactical shoot, you go
round and kill everything in site, apart from your own team
mates and the odd civilian. This doesn’t really represent
life of a Task Force Ranger very well. Also if you study the
level construction and mission detail, it seems unfinished
and shoddy! This game could have done with more thought,
politically and technically. This game isn’t what its
supposed to be, a tactical shooter.
Having said that, I wouldn’t condemn Black Hawk Down to the
dark depths of gaming hell, it is my sort of game. Well, to
a certain extent, it does get tedious and a little boring as
you work your way through the missions. It also makes the
same mistake that every other Delta Force has made, when you
run out of ammunition with your primary weapon, you can’t
pick up the enemies weapon! You would think that if you in
the middle of combat and you run out of ammo you wouldn’t
pick up a fallen AK-47! It’s ridiculous! This isn’t a game
that I would play and play, but play and get board and put
it on the shelf after completing it.

A bit dated, but looks
nice enough, not something to write home about, but
not something to be bothered about. |

Some good gun ho fun
to be had with this one, but there isn’t that much
more to it. |

| Sound
& Music : |
7/10
|
| |
Fairly Average really,
all the normal Middle Eastern back ground noises
with the odd command from a very broad American
accent. |

You can’t play it for
long periods, but this also means that the games
lasts a while, it’s a bit of a mixed blessing. |

Easy to learn, easy to
play, easy to carry on playing, and easy to
complete, Nothing really hard about this one. |

Overall
: 35/50
Overall it’s
a good addition to the Delta Force family, and
a fairly good addition to your collection of
first person shooters. Much better then the
middle two Delta Force’s, but not as good as
the first. If you want a bit of fun, this is
your game. |
