PCRules.com - Grand Theft Auto III Review by Timothy Crittenden

Developer: Take 2 Interactive
Release Date: Out Now
Avg. Price: $4
4.99, £22.99

Remember Grand Theft Auto? If you don't you can't call yourself a gamer! One of the most addictive games ever of its time. Then many years later there came GTA: London, which was an interesting but not overly spectacular add-on. Not long after GTA2 hit the shelves which was originally meant to be GTA 3D, but because it was designed using the boundaries of a console (i.e. the PSX) it failed to become the next generation GTA, instead it was a re-vamped GTA. Present Day finally GTA III in all its 3D wonder, and wonder is the word.

You might think "Oh no not another PS2 conversion!" But no! GTA III for PC was released later than on PS2. This was because they were making it better. In the end becoming far superior to the PS2 version.

Buy from Amazon.co.uk!

GTA III may look better on the PC, but sadly it is highly bugged. No matter what you you do you cannot get the game running stutter free. Tests were done and it only became stutter free on a Pentium 4 2.0GHz with a Geforce 4 at 640x480. Which is ridiculous. So don't worry is your computer has trouble running it your computer isn't outdated yet its just graphically bugged.

System Tested On Verdict

Pentium 4 2.0GHz

256MB DDR

Geforce 4 MX460 64MB

Despite A slight loss in frame rate every now and then, runs very well, as would be expected.

Pentium 3 933MHz

384MB PC133

Geforce 2 GTS 32MB

Graphics no higher then 800x600 otherwise unplayable, even then substantial loss of frame rates, but still very playable.

Pentium 2 400MHz

192MB PC100

ATI Rage Pro 8MB

Keep Dreaming...

As for Sound, this game comes no. 1.  Besides the hilarious comments made by the general public like "My mothers my sister" and "You Pimping Biatch." GTA 3 has amazing in-car radio, from oldies on "Flashback FM", to Classical on "Classic FM", to Rap on "Game Radio"! It also has a talk radio which is incredibly funny, not to mention the imitations of today's commercial radio stations, which make a mockery out of everything from presenters to adverts. In addition you can play you own MP3's in the game, so when you get bored of the radio, you can play some good driving music.

The whole idea of the game is to steal cars and cause havoc. Like in the other GTA's you can do missions, which progress you though the game.  Moving on to different parts of the city, giving you access to better weapons and better vehicles. You play the part of a newly escaped convict, for what crime you don't know.  First you are put to work by the mafia, becoming part of different gangs as you progress through the missions.

This game is very easy to pick up, anyone who has played the previous GTA's will know exactly what they are doing. Once the first, very easy, task is completed you have a fully free run of the city to do what ever you want.  Either start another mission or just cruise.  A great sub game to play is trying to see how many cops you can get after you at once!

Controls.  This is where the PC version is far superior to the PS2 version. Where in the PS2 version you have to cycle through the targets to shoot them, on the PC you have completely free mouse control.  This means you have much better control on how you play the game, and there are no accidental kills. As controls go they are very easy to pick up, whether you are used to PC controls or not.

Sadly GTA III does not have a multiplayer option. Hopefully there will be an update with one as LAN play would be great!

Graphics : 8/10
Nice, but very bugged.  This is where the game is let down.

Game play : 10/10
The Game play is Excellent, very addictive and incredible fun.  Can be just a quick drive, or played for hours on end. This is one of those games that you never get bored of, even when completed.

Sound & Music : 10/10
After nearly completing the game I am still hearing parts of the radio which I have never heard before. It remains very funny, play this game just for the in-car radio, if nothing else!  The added bonus of an mp3 player means you can play your own music, so you'll never get bored of it.

Longevity : 10/10
This Game just goes on and on and on there is always something new you can do, its excellent!

Learning Curve : 10/10
This is one of the easiest games to learn, but can still be quite challenging to master. The basic game play comes easily, but in later stages quick movements and good hand eye co-ordination comes in very handy!

Overall : 48/50

An overall amazing game. Most certainly one of a kind, always fun and hasn't got frustrating yet, which a lot of games tend to get at some point or another. With only the graphics letting it down this game is a must-buy!  Even on a slower machine the slight frame rate loss is well worth coping with for the sheer brilliance of the game that is Grand Theft Auto III.
