PCRules.com - Logitech Cordless Desktop MX for Bluetooth Review by Alex McHardy

Developer: Logitech

Release Date: Out Now

With a name as long as Cordless Desktop MX for Bluetooth for what is essentially a keyboard and mouse, you would be expecting a fair degree of impressiveness with what you find in the box. With this offering from Logitech it’d be hard not to be impressed.

The manufacturer’s specifications are as follows:

Keyboard features
• Ultra-flat, Zero Degree Tilt™ design
It's the keyboard comfort equivalent of sitting in first class.

• Expert web navigation
Programmable one-touch buttons for direct access to any page, file, or program you choose. Plus intuitive left-hand scrolling capability with the unique iNav™ wheel.

• Media centre capabilities
Enjoy total control of your movies and music directly from the keyboard.

• True boot support
Use your Bluetooth keyboard to enter safe mode, access your BIOS, or enter your password with no problems.

Mouse features
• MX™ Optical Engine
New benchmark in optical systems combines high resolution and high frame rate to achieve superior performance.

• More efficient web navigation
Cruise Control™ system combines two buttons with scroll wheel to ease scrolling through long documents or web sites. And two thumb buttons let you move forward or backward between pages.

• Quick Switch Program Selector
Navigate back and forth among active programs and documents.

• Comfortable design
Sleek contoured shape fits snugly into your right hand for optimal comfort.

• Rapid charge base station / Bluetooth wireless hub
Bluetooth wireless hub is also a mouse recharging base to ensure that your mouse is always ready for work or play.

Bluetooth wireless hub features
• Communicate freely
Create, send and receive short message with your Bluetooth keyboard and your Bluetooth cellular phone.

• Get organized
Synchronize your Bluetooth PDA or cell phone with your PC.

• Share with ease
Easily transfer pictures and files between your PC and your Bluetooth mobile devices.

• Free yourself from cables and clutter
Print to a Bluetooth printer and accomplish other computing tasks without wires, and use your mouse or keyboard up to 10 meters away from your PC.

Inside the box you’ll find the keyboard, mouse, batteries, setup CD’s and the Bluetooth hub that also acts as a charging station for the mouse when used with the AC power adapter. Aesthetically the setup looks great. Logitech has gone with the classic silver and black along with a greeny-silvery type colour scheme that should complement just about every desktop setup possible.

Setup was simple as expected and was installed and operational within a few minutes. The mouse and keyboard were both detected automatically paired with the PC. Could it get any simpler?

I’m fairly used to having a feature packed keyboard in the form of my Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop but the keyboard that comes with this package takes extra features to a new level. You’ll find the usual hot-keys that you expect to find on most multimedia keyboards nowadays along with a host of other buttons to press. I setup the shopping button to bring up Amazon and left the rest to bring up the default program they are labelled for e.g. Messenger, web-cam and email. The media controls on the top centre of the keyboard have your play/pause, stop, fast-forward etc. along with a rather funky volume wheel which is great fun to play with. There is also the rather interesting iNav wheel for left handed scrolling from the keyboard which I failed to find much use for other than when I was first waiting for the mouse to charge.

The mouse included in the package is Logitech’s MX 900 which is a Bluetooth version of it wired MX 500 cousin. Again the mouse is jam packed with additional buttons to play with. You’ve got two thumb buttons that allow backwards and forwards actions which are particularly useful for web surfing. There’s also two quick scroll buttons for slightly faster scrolling than the wheel. Another nifty feature is the Quick Switch Program Selector which is great for lazy people like me. You simply press the button and up comes a list of all open windows – no more moving the mouse down to the taskbar to change windows! The overall comfort of the mouse was second to none, it fits perfectly in the hand and is very comfortable to use. When gaming, the mouse responded well in any program I was able to test it in, certainly no lagging behind leaving you with a bullet in the head. The mouse was able to go for about 4 days before it really needed any charging but I leaving it to charge over night to top up the battery keeps you in use all day.

Quality: 10/10
1st class product from the king’s of desktop solutions.

Price: 7/10
At about £115 it’s pretty pricey for what is essentially a keyboard and mouse.

Installation: 10/10
Absolutely flawless, couldn’t be any simpler.

Compatibility: 9/10
Will work with any Windows PC with a USB and PS2 port available which should be no problem.

Performance : 9/10
A great keyboard and a great mouse with loads of buttons to play with and make using the computer ever easier.

Overall : 45/50

A great desktop solution that’s great for lazy people (like me) and people who like to press buttons (like me).
