PCRules.com - Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3 Review By Timothy Crittenden

Developer: Activision
Release Date: Out Now
Avg. Price: $
19.99, £19.99

Tony Hawk is a popular guy, he has now become the main feature of three major

skate boarding sim's. He started out his gaming carrier with Tony Hawks Pro Skater on the Play Station, which in my view is still the best of the trilogy. He then moved on to Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 on the Play Station then got ported to the PC, which also had some bonus levels from the 1st game. Now here is Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3, made for all platforms, Play Station, PS2, Xbox, and PC.

This time it wasn't a port, it came out for the PS2 first, but was designed for the PC as well. But, although it wasn't ported there isn't any difference in the games, so if you already have it for the PS2 or Xbox stick with that.

Buy from Amazon.co.uk!

As usual the game looks much better on the PC than it does on the consol, compared to the Xbox this is purely due to resolution. The game rune very well on all specifications of PC, its not very graphically demanding and many options can be scaled down is your PC can't produce the graphics power needed to give best results.

System Tested On Verdict

Pentium 4 2.3GHz

512MB DDR

Geforce 2 Ti4400 128MB

As Smooth as smooth can be at the highest Resolution and full detail

Pentium 4 2.0GHz

256MB DDR

Geforce 4 MX460 64MB

As Smooth as smooth can be at the highest Resolution and full detail

Pentium 3 933MHz

384MB PC133

Geforce 2 GTS 32MB

Graphics need to be toned down a little, but not much to get perfectly smooth game play, should run fine on lower spec systems

The Tony Hawks series has to have one of the best soundtracks, (in my opinion), ever. With artists like Xzibit, Redman, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, House of Pain, Motorhead, Alien Ant Farm, and A.F.I it is just music to my ears. you can also choose which tracks you want to be played so if there is one or two you particularly don't like then you don't have to play them. The actual sound effects are good, the odd very realistic sounding crunch as you miss a trick and crash to the ground.

The game is basically a skateboarding simulation, you can play as one of many characters as well as creating you own. With your character you play through nine huge and very different skating environments, ranging from a factory to and airport. each level you have 9 different goals to complete and they increase in difficulty with each level. you also can collect stats points and different decks to use. With the stats points you can increase you characters abilities in different ways to make him/her better at different tricks.

The game is very easy to pick up, if you have played any of the other Tony Hawks games then you will pick this up very quickly. But although it is very easy to pick up it is quite hard to become a master at the game. The only real downer about this game that is really needs a game pad to be played properly, although the keyboard works fairly well, to take full advantage, and got take the game to its full potential a game pad is needed (my personally recommended game pad is the Logitech Wingman Cordless, reviewed here)

The game also comes with a park editor, so when you get bored of going round and round the pre designed levels you can play on your own levels. There are so many options in the designer, it will take a while to run out of things to add to you level. It is also fairly straight forward to use, so even people with fairly little computer knowledge can build there own.

Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3 has a multiplayer, for LAN and the Internet, this a lot of fun competing against fellow skaters competing for the best score.

Graphics : 8/10
Very nice looking graphics especially on the skater, the only little glitch is has every now and then is when you bail you sink into the ground.

Game play : 7/10
The Game play is excellent, although after playing for a while and not being able to complete a certain goal on a level, you do end up wanting to smash you monitor.

Sound & Music : 8/10
Music is great (in my opinion), the sound is good but could be better

Longevity : 9/10
This game is a great one if you board and you just want to have a quick 30 minutes gaming, and you keep playing it for years. And when you get board you can move on to making your own levels. But still a 30 min session is all I can take.

Learning Curve : 9/10
The basic moves are very basic, but the tricky moves are very tricky, this makes it a very easy game to learn but a very hard game to master, which is perfect.

Overall : 41/50

This game is great, doesn't quite live up the the standard of the 1st, but if you don't have it you should, its also great fun with you mates, but sadly, its better played on a console as you need more than one computer for multiplayer. But for any extreme sport simulations far, this is one of the better of the bunch.
